Week 1 in Energy

Subject: Science / Chemistry : Important Women in Physics

Book to read: Marie Curie's Search for Radium by  Beverly Birch & Christian Birmingham


Online Links: Nobel Prize.org, radiation protection, Marie Curie

Activities for the session:
  • Introduce key vocabulary: compound, element, energy, mineral, physicist, radiation, radioactivity
  • visit Big Discovery and complete the worksheet using the information found at a website that provides relevant information about Madame Curie, listed in above links. 
  • visit the EPA‘s Radiation Protection Pages where they will learn about radiation and radiation protection. This site is easy to navigate and provides a wealth of information. Before they leave the site, encourage students to do one or more of the following: take a quiz, calculate their annual dose of radiation, complete a word search or crossword puzzle. 


  • Marie Curie's Discovery Worksheet

    Then answer the following questions and write a story about Marie Curie.
    1. What are the names of the two elements that Marie Curie discovered?





    2. How did Marie Curie know that she had discovered a new radioactive element?





    3. Write a brief story that describes what Marie Curie might have felt when she realized that she had discovered a new element.
